Using A Commercial Locksmith In Seattle To Keep Your Business Secure

card key commercial locksmith

If you own or manage a business, security is probably one of your top priorities. If it isn’t, it should be. Theft of physical property and data can not only cost you money, it can cost you the trust of your customers. If they can’t rely on you to keep their information safe from thieves, they’ll probably take their business elsewhere.

Commercial Locksmiths Keep Your Building Secure

Surveillance cameras are great for catching thieves in the act, but they don’t do a thing to stop them breaking in. When it comes to security, your best plan of action is prevention. Your Seattle commercial locksmith will tell you that locks stop thieves, but only if they are working properly.

If you have old or broken locks on your premises, you are making it much easier for thieves to help themselves to your hard-earned money. If you have just moved into the building after previous tenants have used it, you need to have the locks changed or re-keyed.

If you fire an employee who had access to the building keys, you should have the locks changed to prevent your former employee from gaining access to the building and damaging your business or its property.

Commercial Locksmith In Seattle Protecting You From Data Theft

If you keep sensitive data, either in digital form or in paper records, you need to be sure that only approved people have access to it. Storing it in desks or unlocked filing cabinets makes it more vulnerable to thieves who would use it to commit identity theft or fraud against your company, its employees and even your customers.

Ask your commercial locksmith about installing locks in your filing cabinets or installing keypad locks that require a pass code to unlock them. This type of keyless entry lock makes it easy to keep your data safe but easily accessible to those who need to access it.

Why 24 Hour Locksmith Services Are Important For Your Business

Your business may not operate 24/7, but that doesn’t mean you won’t need out of hours locksmith services. You really don’t want to rely on a locksmith that only keeps traditional business hours, or you’ll find yourself interrupting your customers and employees by having your locks maintained or installed during business hours.

If you find yourself in need of an emergency locksmith for your business, you don’t want to waste time searching for one that will only come out after hours for an exorbitant fee. You are much better off starting with a guaranteed 24/7 commercial locksmith who will always be ready to meet your business’ security needs.

The 4 Most Common Locksmith Services

Everyone knows locksmiths open locks and install them, but what types of other services do they offer?

Residential Locksmith

These locksmiths work on and around your home. They fix up old locks and replace them when needed. Home owners generally use their services to secure their property and make sure no bad guys get in. These guys can cut keys for you and help you with home safes. Make sure to ask a residential locksmith for security advice to make your home stronger.

A commercial locksmith helps around businesses big and small. These guys can help install security systems in buildings with many different access points. If you need card access systems, these are your guys. Biometric Locks (Fingerprint) can be installed for an even greater level of security. Ask your local locksmith what they can do for you.

The automotive locksmith can help you in a few different ways. They are specialists in cars and car keys which can be very tricky. Due to their being so many different makes and models, it can be hard for an auto locksmith to do his or her job. Not all locksmiths can work on tricky car locks, so be sure to call ahead and ask!

Emergency locksmiths are often called upon by people in need. Have you ever locked your keys in the car or needed to get into somewhere without a key? That’s what they do. Make sure to have identification, they won’t open the door to anyone’s car or home besides yours! Hopefully you won’t be needing the services of a 24 hour emergency locksmith, but if you do make sure to save the number in your phone.

Getting To Know the Locksmith Profession

I have been a mobile locksmith for the better part of 10 years. I have worked in and alongside all facets of the locksmith industry. Locksmithing is a critical trade that is often underrepresented in the trades community, and the people at large. But what is a locksmith, and why is it important to know? As one locksmith I spoke with frankly stated, “a locksmith works with locks.” The essentialism is quite true, yet fails to engage with the dynamic variety within the industry. Locksmithing comprises specific knowledge and skills designed for maintaining access control. Access control ensures that those who are allowed entrance to a specific area or building are permitted, while those who are not allowed entrance to a building are denied. Access control is everywhere – be it the locks on your house or store, your vehicle, parkade or gated community. Many locksmiths I have sat down with were either owner and operator of their own business, or they owned a locksmith shop from which they dispatched mobile technicians. Locksmith technicians operate in many forms and often take on a specialized roles in the industry.

Risks of Propping Open a Door for Convenient Entry

Propping the door open seems like a good option on the fly, but a little more thought would point out potential dangers. Doors are gateways that let anything in or out of a room. From security to animal infestations, leaving the door open, although convenient, may lead to unexpected results.

Temperature Control

The structure around a building is the envelope. The better seal an envelope has, the more efficient the heating and cooling system. Leaving a door open breaks that seal by letting the outside environment invade the space. In other words, the hot summer air or frigid winter cold enters the temperature-controlled area. To make matters worse, the conditioned air leaves the room and goes outdoors. The job of a thermostat is to regulate the temperature. It doesn’t care if the door is open. It will run the equipment and energy bill up to maintain that environment, so propping the door ends up costing money.

Wildlife, Pets and Insects

Leaving an open door provides a warm, inviting environment for the native wildlife. Once an animal gets in, it is not always easy to get it out. In addition to squirrels, birds, skunks and raccoons, an open door lets in bugs of all types. Cockroaches, flies and mosquitoes enter through the small gap and take up residence in any nook and cranny they find.

For pet owners, what comes in from the outside is not the only consideration. With an open door, the cat, dog or ferret may go out and get lost. And what comes in – like a snake or rabid animal – may present a hazard to a beloved family pet, as well.

The most obvious risk is to security. An open door gives anyone access to a house or business. Someone walking by might decide that door is an invitation to steal or do worse. The open door is not just convenient for the person who propped it.

You should consider hiring a residential or commercial locksmith in your local area to secure your home even further. A open door can be a security threat, but a unsecured lock can be a huge security threat!

And What if It Closes?

A propped door may not stay open. If the reason behind propping is to avoid letting the lock engage, when the prop slips there is a problem that requires the attention of a commercial or residential locksmith.

Let’s face it; things don’t always go as planned. Propping the door open can lead to a very unpleasant surprise even if it is convenient. Propping may work a hundred times in a row, but it only takes one time for a rock, brick or doorstop to be knocked loose. The door slams shut with the keys inside along with your dinner baking in the oven or your child napping in her crib.. No matter how easy it is to prop, the potential risks make it unwise.

It is always a good idea to know a local locksmith who can help you out when needed.  You can always find one in the Yellow Pages, through word of mouth, or through an internet search.  When searching online, be sure to include your town or zip code in the search box to find someone closest to you; for example, if in Bethesda, search for: locksmith in Bethesda.

Ways To Ensure Your Business Premises Is Secure

Whether you are just starting out or you’re well into your 20th year of running a successful business, you’ll know the importance of keeping your premises secure. When we start up a business we often put everything we have into it, and that’s not just money. It’s our time, our commitment and our lives. Setting up your own business takes a lot of courage and belief. If your business is attacked by thieves it can feel as if they have taken not only money from you but also everything you have put into your business. Unfortunately there will always be thieves around, we cannot prevent that, but we can prevent them from breaking into our premises.

Locks And Doors
Many of us would assume a simple lock and gate would be enough to stop any intruders from breaking in. But thieves know your business is your way of making money. Even if you don’t have hard cash in your premises they know there will be something of worth inside, whether that be stock or computers and tills etc. With that knowledge in hand (and experience) they will not have a problem getting through flimsy gates and locks.
Not only should you call a commercial locksmith to fit the entrance of your premises with strong and secure locks, you should also fit any windows. If a thief does manage to break in, make sure you have a room in your building where you can lock away anything of value whenever you are closed. Make it as difficult for them as possible!

Gates, Grilles And Shutter
Investing in security grilles and gates is one of the best things you can do to help prevent a break in. It does make closing a slightly lengthier process, but it’s well worth spending the extra time and money on a local locksmith.
Not so long ago the majority of gates and grilles you physically took off the windows and doors in the morning and put back on in the evening. While these were somewhat effective, if you can take them off, a thief will find a way in as well. You can now invest in electric shutters and security grilles. Making the process of shutting up a little easier, and it that much harder for a thief to break in.

Draw Attention!
If someone is going to break in, one of the best things you can do is to draw attention to them at all stages. Hopefully your business is already in a well lit area, but whether it is or not after you have locked up make sure you have a motion detector light. When anyone gets too close to the door to your premises it will turn on drawing attention to them. If this doesn’t put them off and they do still manage to get in, make sure your business is set up with an alarm. This will need to be as loud as possible and continue to go off until someone turns it off with the correct code. You can also fit a flashing light inside that goes off when the alarm goes off. Draw as much attention as possible and hopefully any intruder will be spooked before they can get away with any of your possessions.

Your business I expect, is so important to you, it’s not worth scrimping on security as there is a lot more at stake. Calling a commercial locksmith is the best way to secure your local business. Unfortunately burglaries are always going to happen, but do everything you can to prevent them. You can never be too cautious. I would also recommend investing in a good CCTV system. At least then if they do manage to break in, you will have a better chance of catching the culprit and getting your possessions back.

Make Your Home a Less Attractive Opportunity for Burglars

There is a well-known story of a cameraman on a safari that begins to put his running shoes on when he encounters a angry troublesome lion. When his assistant reminds him that he could not possibly out run a lion the cameraman replies that all he needs to do is out run his assistant and he will be fine. In a sense this same principle could be applied to keeping your home protected from burglars because all that is often needed is a system that is better than your neighbour’s. Continue reading

How can you Test your Home Security System?

You rely on your home security alarm to protect your family in the event of a break-in or fire. Whether you are sleeping in your own bed or away on business, you want to know that your system will work properly when it’s needed most. Test your residential or commercial system on a regular basis to ensure that everything is operating the way it should.
Physical Inspection
It’s important to look at sensors occasionally and make sure they are still in place. A sensor that has fallen out of position is not protecting your residential home, and it should be addressed immediately. Physically inspect all sensors to ensure that they are in place and unbroken before you proceed with the test.
While you are looking at the window sensors, take a moment to check window locks and door locks. Latch them securely and try jiggling the window or door to ensure that they remain locked. This is particularly important on ground-level bedroom windows. Windows that are easily opened are tempting for thieves, and it’s always best to keep them out of the house completely. While the alarm would sound and protect your family, it’s still wise to keep the windows locked and avoid the stress.
Testing Steps
• Start by Calling the Monitoring Company
False alarms are never fun, and you can avoid one easily by calling the monitoring company when you are preparing to test the system. They recommend monthly testing, so they are more than happy to place your account on test while you go through the necessary checks of the system.
• Disable the Siren
You don’t want the siren wailing every time you open a window during the test, so take the time to turn it off. It may be tempting to leave the siren on just to see the neighbors start to twitch, but then they will ignore your alarm if it ever goes off in a real emergency. If you live out in the country and don’t mind the siren, then you can leave it engaged. If you aren’t sure how to turn the siren off, ask the security representative to walk you through the process when you call to inform them of the test.
• Set the Alarm and Start Testing Entries
Methodically move through one room of your house at a time and open the exit doors and windows. Open and close each location, listening to be sure that your alarm has detected the change. Walk back and forth in front of motion detectors to ensure that they sense your movement. Test smoke detectors by using a can of smoke used for testing these systems. Flood sensors can be checked by using a piece of metal to connect the metal prongs on the sensor. This will create the same effect as water and the alarm should sound. Use a carbon monoxide testing kit to make sure CO detectors are working properly.
• Call the Monitoring Company and Turn the System On
A quick phone call will restore service to your alarm and ensure that your home is once again protected. If you have turned off the siren, have the agent step you through turning it back on.
Test Communications with the Alarm Company
Once you know that all sensors are working properly inside the home, you need to make sure that your system will communicate properly with the monitoring company. Arm the system and set it off. While the alarm is going off and sending a signal to the company, you should not have a dial tone on your home phone. If the line is dead or you hear a buzzing similar to a fax tone, then the system needs to be serviced. Notify the company that you will do this ahead of time to avoid a false alarm.
Residential and Commercial Locksmiths
Ask a local locksmith to help you with testing your locks. A alarm system is only as good as it’s weakest link. Have a professional locksmith or security professional help you test your locks and your entire security system. Your family will have a safer place to live if you test your system regularly.
Your Responsibility
The monitoring company is responsible for responding to alarm calls, but you are responsible for maintaining the system inside your home. Most companies expect that you will perform regular checks of the system to ensure that there are not any broken sensors or other problems. They are happy to correct any problems, but it is up to you to notify them of issues.
Personalized Assistance
If the testing process seems a little overwhelming, you don’t have to worry. Help is only a phone call away. Most monitoring companies are happy to step you through the process of testing your system. It’s the best way to ensure that your family remains safe with a working alarm system.
Your home security system provides you with valuable protection from fire, carbon monoxide and break-ins. You can count on the monitoring company to keep an eye on your system, but it’s up to you to test it occasionally. The monitoring company can walk you through the process if you have any questions, but you will see that it is very easy to handle the test yourself. Protect your family by testing your system monthly and making sure that everything is working correctly.

4 Types of Martial Arts Used for Self Defense

There are many forms of Martial Arts that can be practiced or taught and used for self defense. See a list below for many of the most effective fighting styles from around the world. Remember a professional residential or commercial locksmith is always a great self defense.

1. Japanese & Brazilian Ju-jitsu

Ju-jitsu is a mixture that incorporates grappling, striking, eye gouging, choke holds, joint locks, and biting when practiced. It uses simple movements that are very effective. If attacked with a weapon, you trap the attacker’s arm, deliver a hand strike to his collar area, while pushing him backward and down, locking the wrist that was holding the weapon. If your attacker tries to kick you, you sidestep his kick, pin his leg, and deliver your own kick onto his raised knee, shoving it backward, and then whipping him around by his raised leg. He will go down and will unlikely be able to retaliate from his poor positioning.

2. Western-style Boxing

Western boxers punch, block, bob, and weave back and forth. They are taught repeatedly to “always protect yourself”. The hands are kept held high on both sides of the head with elbows tucked in and the body crouched and ready for action. The front of the upper body is being protected by the forearms and the chin is guarded by the shoulders.

3. The Keysi Fighting Method

The Keysi Fighting Method is a close combat system using every weapon the body can wield quickly, including the head, fists, knees, and elbows which is demonstrated by Christian Bale in Chris Nolan’s Batman movies. Batman regularly engages a fight with five, ten or more bad guys at a time, and while this is somewhat unrealistic, Keysi does focus on warding off multiple attackers.

4. Isreal’s Krav Maga

Krav Maga is Israel’s national martial art and dedicated for the purpose of street survival. It combines western boxing, karate kicks, wrestling, and ju-jitsu ground fighting. This is a simultaneous defense or attack. So instead of blocking an attack and then retaliating, practitioners block attacks and counterstrike simultaneously.  An example would be blocking with the left arm, pushing forward with the legs while striking with the right fist; practically at the same time.

The above mentioned may not be the most popular of the forms of martial arts practiced in the world, but they are a few of the methods of self-defense that can be highly effective. When seeking a martial arts style to study, look for one that offers an all around mix of different disciplines that will help you to be the best prepared when you need to rely on your training. Such styles include MMA (mixed martial arts) schools, taekwondo, ju-jitsu, and American Kenpo.
